Which Compound to Use to Manufacture a Vehicle Fuel Cap

What Is It?

Glass fiber reinforced Polyamide 6 — NEXXALON™ Glass Filled Compound — is a PA6 base resin chemically coupled with glass fiber at loadings typically ranging from 10% to 50%. The coupling agent bonds the glass fiber to the polyamide matrix so that load is transferred efficiently between the resin and reinforcement, rather than the fiber simply sitting inert inside the plastic.

How It's Manufactured

The compound is produced on a twin-screw extruder, where PA6 resin, glass fiber, and heat stabilizers are melt-compounded under controlled temperature and shear. Twin-screw compounding is what allows the glass fiber to be dispersed evenly through the resin without excessive fiber breakage — uneven dispersion or over-shortened fibers are the most common causes of inconsistent mechanical properties in glass-filled compounds. The compounded material is pelletized, then sample batches are tested in-house for melt flow index (MFI) and tensile/flexural strength before release.

Manufacturing Process for This Application

Fuel caps are produced by injection molding. The PA6 GF pellets are dried (polyamides are hygroscopic and absorb moisture, which causes hydrolytic degradation and surface defects if molded wet), then injected into a mold at controlled barrel and mold temperatures. Because the part is thin-walled but must hold dimensional tolerance under thermal cycling (engine bay heat, fuel vapor, outdoor sun exposure), mold cooling time and gate placement are tuned to minimize warpage from the glass fiber's directional shrinkage.

Why Polymer Choice Matters Here

The polymer and fill level chosen here directly determines whether the part survives its service life. An unfilled PA6 would flex too much under the cap's twist-lock mechanism and creep over time under sustained clamping load. A polymer with poor chemical resistance to hydrocarbons would swell, crack, or leach into the fuel. And a compound without adequate glass reinforcement would not hold its molded dimensions through repeated heat-cool cycling in an engine bay — leading to a loose or leaking seal, which for a fuel cap is a safety-relevant failure mode, not just a cosmetic one.
