Which Compound to Use to Manufacture a Cable Tie
What Is It?
NEXXALON™ PA66 Unfilled Compound is a self-lubricating, good-flow polyamide 66 resin, chosen over PA6 for parts that need PA66's higher stiffness and better dimensional accuracy straight out of the mold.
How It's Manufactured
PA66 resin is compounded with heat stabilizers on a twin-screw line and pelletized. PA66's higher melting point than PA6 means the compounding and later molding temperature profile has to be adjusted upward accordingly, which is one of the practical reasons the two resins are not simply interchangeable in a mold designed for one or the other.
Manufacturing Process for This Application
Cable ties are injection molded in high volume from dried PA66 pellets. The ratchet-and-pawl locking mechanism relies on precise, repeatable dimensional accuracy at a very thin cross-section, and PA66's good flow combined with self-lubricating properties lets it fill and release from that fine mold detail consistently, cycle after cycle.
Why Polymer Choice Matters Here
A cable tie has to flex enough to loop around a bundle and then hold rigid tension indefinitely at the ratchet without creeping loose — too soft a polymer creeps and loosens over time under sustained tension, while too rigid or brittle a polymer cracks at the ratchet teeth during installation.
Why This Compound Is Suited
PA66's combination of accurate dimensional parts, good flow, and self-lubrication is why it is the material of choice for cable ties over PA6, and cable ties are explicitly listed as an application for this grade.
Nexxa Compounds is a leading manufacturer of PA66 compounds for cable tie applications in India, supplying some of the largest manufacturers across India and internationally.
